Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- Reassemble!

Recyclo-bot is a subscription-box service for kids aimed at growing their imaginations. This service utilizes recycled materials to assemble a fun new critter along with the instructions. Recently, I was brought on board to design the friend of the month over at Recyclo-bot. This project aims to teach children about nature, fine motor skills, and creativity.
The first step was understanding the brand was to design a logo. The elements were all there– An earth friendly crate aimed for young kids. I knew I wanted to utilize a friendly green to symbolize that earth-conscious element, something bright and fun to attract the little ones. Aswell, a robot icon was the most fitting for this design. After a couple iterations, I ended up with the final logo as seen above.

In order to know what I was doing before I got too far in, I created a physical “recyclo-bot” before I began any design work on the instructions. My first idea was to create a white rabbit using plastic spoons and a Q-tip. However, after assembly, it looked more like a mouse– So a mouse it became! I took a few photographs of the creation until I got a cover photo I was happy with. Then, I took that photo into Illustrator and began to design the front cover of the instructions. Reyclo-bot features 3 fun facts on the front of their instructions, either about the animal or about recycling as a subject. I decided to feature facts about mice that a lot of people might not know. Finally, I added the logo I created earlier and that creates the front cover.

Now for the tough part- Writing the instructions. I first began writing the steps on a document, going step by step on what I did to assemble the mouse. Once I was happy with that, I began work on the assets. I made each element of the mouse a key illustration– spoon, googly eyes, egg carton, etc– and divided those up, that way I could combine them with each step. The instructions came out great and can easily be followed by anyone. This design was different from my usual demographic, however it is one I am very proud of. Try it yourself to make your own Recyclo-Bot!
