NerdBox- The Catalog for Gamers

When learning Adobe Photoshop, understanding how to isolate something from the background is a rather important skill. To hone in on this, my group was tasked with creating a catalog for something we have a collection of. I have an extensive collection of Pokemon merchandise, so I decided to use this as my products. The first task was to take our photographs– We selected 10 items from our collections to use for this step. We used a light tent to create beautiful product photography on a nice seamless background, making it easier to isolate.

Once I had these photographs, I moved to Photoshop and began creating my clipping masks. It is a tedious process utilizing the pen tool, however, it yields the cleanest results. A lot of people do not often think about product photos on websites, but it involves a lot of work to get those clean photographs. When everything was isolated, it was time to design the catalog. This catalog would aim to sell the products you were advertising. I decided to use a general video-game themed company name, not just a Pokemon one– This catalog would be the Pokemon themed monthly addition. So, for this monthly subscription, I decided on the brand name NerdBox, a company that aims for the niche geek demographic.

Now for the cover. I knew I wanted to use a Nintendo Switch for this as an attraction to the gamer demographic, and to tie back into the Pokemon theme. I used my own Switch for this and set it up on a lit backdrop for some top-down photography. I used some of the figurines I photographed for the catalog as an extra bonus around the screen, and created 2 call-outs: A new release sticker, and a section discussing the release of the newer games, Scarlet and Violet. I wanted to use this game’s release as the focal point for this catalog. So, I used these colors as a base color palette for the pages. The first page will be all about this release, showing off the themed items for the game and a header screenshot from the game. On the second page, I chose an item to highlight as an on-sale feature, accompanied with the rest of the catalog(Click to expand). This project is a perfect blend of photography and design.
